Don't over fertilizeDon't exceed recommended amounts. Extra fertilizer will not help poor growth caused by disease or pests. Excessive fertilizer can bypass roots (see animation) and enter the groundwater or be washed from the yard during rainstorms.

If you apply a fertilizer with less than 30 percent slow-release, only apply 1/2 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn per application. If it has more than 30 percent slow-release nitrogen, you may apply up to one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn.
