Prevent Pollution
  • Avoid using 'weed and feed' products that combine herbicides and fertilizer. Pesticides should be applied only to affected areas, rather than broadcast over the entire yard as occurs with a weed and feed product.
  • Don't fertilize if heavy rain is forecast. The potential for fertilizer runoff into storm drains or leaching through soil increases with heavy rains.
In summer, when turf is actively growing, apply an iron source instead of a nitrogen fertilizer to green the lawn without increasing growth. Use chelated iron or iron sulfate.

Avoid fertilizing before rainstorms. Your investment in fertilizer will go down the drain and into the river or lake.
